Mattel VP Apologizes To China
After recalling over 21 million Chinese made toys worldwide for fear of lead contamination, Mattel VP Thomas Bebrowski has issued an apology to China’s product safety chief Li Changjiang.
The public apology stems from China’s insistence, and Mattel’s subsequent admission that part of the recall was related to Mattel’s faulty designs rather than Chinese manufacturing flaws.
Mattel admitted that too many toys had been recalled, but that it was a result of their “safety first” approach. While recent testing on the recalled products has shown that most meet U.S. standards for lead contamination, several with inherently risky design flaws will not be reintroduced into the market. Among those are “Lead Smelter Barbie” and the widely popular “Paint Chip Jigsaw Puzzle” brands.
